Need a workout? Thompson’s Station man’s AirGym app went live on July 1

A Thompson’s Station man’s idea to come up with an Airbnb-style app to connect home gym owners and those who would like to work out goes live today.

Chris Daskam came up with the idea after his neighbors in the Canterbury subdivision invited him to work out in their garage.

Daskam, who lives in the Canterbury subdivision in Thompson’s Station, had admired their home gym from afar, and when they invited him to work out there, he accepted the offer.

When he came home he started looking for an app that would match people looking for a workout with people who have home gyms. He couldn’t find one, so he decided to make it.

In December of 2017, Daskam started AirGym and began looking for the perfect app developer
to make sure the back end and the execution would be flawless.

“As I began looking for app developers, I knew I wanted someone with fitness experience,
booking experience and they had to fall within my self-funded budget,” Daskam said. He said he
eventually went with Cubet Techno and is very happy with the result.

AirGym will work a lot like the vacation rental platform Airbnb. People who own home gyms can post their gym on the application and charge people to use the space. Customers will able to scroll through the app to pick out the gym that works best for them. Then they schedule a time when it’s open, and get a workout in.

airgym “On the way home from work … if you’re going to pass 15 AirGyms in the future you can see which one makes the most sense for your schedule,” Daskam said.

At a traditional gym, members pay a set fee each month to use the facility. Daskam said that generally requires gyms to have lots of members. AirGym would charge users by the hour for the time they spend in the gym. Daskam is hoping it will be in the range of $1 to $3 per hour, though it is up to the owners to decide how much to charge.

The application isn’t limited to just weight rooms and barbells. It could also include yoga studios or spaces to practice martial arts. Daskam hopes that diversity will help people find a place that has exactly what they want.

Daskam, who works full time at a drug rehabilitation center, said that much like Airbnb, this application could also be a business opportunity for owners.

The AirGym app is free to download and there are no subscriptions or commitments required
to use the app, which is geared toward three main groups: home gym owners, members and
personal trainers.

“The app has a ‘find my trainer’ section where trainers can list their certification and licensure
and potential clients can find them on the app for free,” Daskam said. “Trainers like to have
one-on-one sessions with their clients and that is hard to do at a big gym. This app allows them
to create a more personal workout at someone’s home gym.”
